In 1989, Huang Jiang, a Hong Kong art dealer, arrived in Dafen, rented a house for the collection and resale of oil paintings, and recruited students to paint and sell the paintings to foreign dealers. In creating Dafen Oil Painting Village, he brought the oil painting industry to this region.
