Our Commitment
At Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, we are committed to preserving and regenerating the environment and leaving a positive, enduring impact on our local community. Below are some of the sustainability initiatives we have implemented at our property. Click here to learn more about global Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts at Four Seasons.
our initiatives
- Resort-specific Sustainability Management Plan in place
- Bicycles available for guest use
- Electrically powered golf buggies and scooters are used by employees
- Vegan and vegetarian menu items available
- Linens and towels replaced every third day, unless otherwise requested
- Member of the Green Globe program for sustainable travel and tourism
- Energy is sourced from renewable or carbon-free sources, including an on-island solar farm consisting of 7,236 solar panels spanning 12,140 square metres, the second largest in the Seychelles. This helps to reduce diesel usage by 1,200 cubic metres per year, equating to 3,200 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually
- Water heated at the Resort by a combination of a heat recovery system and solar power, with electrical water heating used only when surplus demand cannot be met
- Implementation of in-villa energy-saving controls and building systems, including LED lighting and water heat pumps in all villas, improving energy efficiency by 70%
- Water is sourced from the ocean through desalination, treated and bottled for guest consumption on site. Since the start of this project in 2018, over 1.4 million litres of potable water have been produced, resulting in the elimination of up to 360,000 plastic bottles annually
- Grey water is recycled and used to water the gardens and flush toilets
- Elimination of single-use plastic water bottles
- Refillable ceramic containers are used for all bathroom amenities in our villas and spa
- Recycling program in place for glass and kitchen and engine oils
- Organic waste diversion program in place for coconut shells, food waste and some landscaping waste
- Local, sustainable and seasonal menu items available
- Cage-free eggs
- A significant portion of our eggs (an average of 15,000 eggs per month) and fresh produce (approximately 3,500 kg of fresh fruits and vegetables per month) are sourced from the island’s agricultural farm, which is operated by the Island Development Company (IDC)
- Local biodiversity support program in place through our partnership with the Desroches Island Conservation Society (ICS) that hosts activities, including tortoise feeding and tortoise adoption, at the on-resort Tortoise Sanctuary that helps conserve these animals
- Desroches ICS opened in 2009 and is involved in conserving terrestrial and marine wildlife through effective protection and science-based management. The main objectives are to protect the marine and terrestrial environments, to rehabilitate, monitor and research the environment, to educate staff and guests and to make sure Desroches Island is an environmental rehabilitation success through a partnership of ecotourism and conservation
- Guests can engage in educational tours at local, natural, cultural, historic or heritage sites to learn more about the local community, including joining the FS Island Conservationist on a walk or cycle around our lush island and exploring the indigenous plants and animals that call Desroches their home
- Linen, furniture and equipment donated to employees in addition to the local community through the Seychelles Red Cross Society
- Employees complete annual Human Trafficking Awareness and annual Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse trainings
- Employees volunteer their time, and Four Seasons guests can volunteer their time, to the local community on beach cleanups, organized by the FS Island Conservationist and ICS. The debris that washes ashore is sorted and recycled
- Employees participate in an annual charity event, Run for Hope, to raise awareness and funds for cancer research
- Eco-certified cleaning products used
