KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: YOUR MARINE BIOLOGY JOURNEY BEGINS HERE

The fight for a healthier ocean is real and not to be taken lightly. That’s why our new Trainee Marine Biologist program is a serious foundation for scientifically minded teens, those considering a career in marine biology or anyone with a genuine desire to engage with the natural world. Targeting 13- to 18-year-olds – or young adults with a passion for environmental action – our six one-day, one-on-one modules combine practical activities with comprehensive take-home texts for a deep dive into what it takes to be a marine biologist.

What might your day as a Trainee Marine Biologist look like?

Using artificial intelligence to monitor coral reef restoration? Helping with the non-stop production of algae, rotifers and artemia in our Fish Lab? Tracking and identifying dolphins around the islands? Supporting our on-site Veterinarian administering life-saving care to injured sea turtles in our Rehabilitation Centre? While each of the six modules includes a structured theoretical component, there’s no such thing as a standard day as a marine biologist. When it comes to practical learning, it’s important to be prepared for whatever the ocean may throw at you.

TRAINEE MARINE BIOLOGIST Program

Turtle Biologist
Around since the time of the dinosaurs, sea turtles are found throughout the world’s oceans – with the exception of the polar seas – but six of their seven species are at risk of extinction. Alongside our resident Turtle Biologist, learn about sea turtle anatomy and biology, the threats sea turtles face in the wild and what we can do to help conserve them.
Coral Biologist
Discover the incredible underwater world of coral reefs – the most diverse of all marine ecosystems – and what you can do to help ensure their survival. Alongside our resident Coral Biologist, take part in every aspect of our coral restoration project, from preparing and transplanting to photographing and uploading.
Dolphin Biologist
Be part of the conservation story of the Maldives’ much-loved marine mammals: dolphins and whales. Working alongside our Dolphin Biologists, you’ll find out all about these magnificent creatures, cruise around the islands to track their movements, and take and process photos to identify individual dolphins.
Aquarist
Take a closer look at some of the smaller organisms that inhabit the underwater world. From plankton to clownfish, rotifers to jellyfish, each species plays a part in ensuring healthy ecosystems that sustain life. We’ll introduce you to the work we do in the Fish Lab, assess the dangers and threats facing each species, and explore how we can help ourselves by helping the oceans.
Plankton Biologist
Discover the role these incredible organisms play in our lives, from providing the oxygen we breathe to helping us track climate events and understanding the migration of large sea animals. Be a part of the first long-term, continuous plankton survey in the Maldives and help contribute to a model of plankton diversity and biomass that we hope will expand into a national database.
Manta Biologist
Gain insight into the secret lives of the gentle giants of the Maldives: manta rays. Spend time with these majestic animals and learn from our Manta Ray Biologists. Discover how we work to conserve and protect the local manta ray population, and become a part of our research journey, from photo identification to helping monitor behaviour and environmental conditions that influence where manta rays are seen.
