For a laid-back day in the country, head southeast to the Alentejo region. Sunsoaked and slower-paced, its gently rolling plains are home to vineyards, olive groves and forests of cork oaks. The mid-May to early July cork harvest here produces about half the world's supply. September's grape harvest brings boisterous grape stomping, followed by olive picking in late fall.
